Over the years as I have moved and changed I have gotten rid of many things and I have kept only 4 things from my younger days; a book of translations of ancient Chinese and Japanese poetry, my bamboo flute, an image of a Bodhisattva, and my collection of rocks. I started collecting rocks with their simplicity, austerity, dignified beauty, and spirit when I was a teen, perhaps influenced by the book of poems I read as a child. The rocks have been gathered from New England, Mid Atlantic states as well as Texas, California, New Mexico and the Dakotas. When I travel for work/training’s I try and take some time to find a rock that expresses something of the place.

See NHK post about:  Suiseki Wikipedia Some of my rocks below.

Short video testing Sony RM-VPR1 remote control with the Sony Ax-53. Slow steady zoom out, zooming in slow and fast short bursts. This remote works with various Sony camera’s and can zoom, turn on/off camera, as well as take photos. Recorded at 4k 29 frames/second, audio 2 channels 197kbps @ 48 kHz with builtin microphone. Auto settings including active stabilization. My back yard, midday. Not a review nor endorsement.

Seeing with my camera eye

One way of getting the creative juices flowing and being creative is changing how you see things. You can get closer or further away, look with one eye closed, tilt your head, turn the object upside down (or yourself), look during a different time of day, notice what the object reminds you of, notice any scents, texture, angles, weight, temperature of the object.

When I photograph I do all of those ways of seeing taking multiple shots from different angles, heights, spend and light adjustments. The photo below (click to enlarge) I took after walking through the woods and I sat down to rest. I was noticing the way the light was being blocked by the leaves and creating a spot light effect. Later when I got home and was comparing multiple shots of the same image I noticed that when I converted a shot to black and white it was nearly the same as the color shot. Wisps of color.
