Interesting news item from National Public Radio: Birds of a feather flock together. The age-old adage now carries scientific weight. A new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests genes may influence how people pick their friends. James Fowler, professor of medical genetics and political science at the University of California, San Diego, is the author of the study and he tells host Guy Raz there’s biology in social chemistry. Rutu Modan, an illustrator and comic book creator, is a chosen artist of the Israel Cultural Excellence Foundation. She has done comic strips for the Israeli newpapers Yedioth Acharonot and Ma’ariv and illustrations for The New Yorker, Le Monde, The New York Times and many other publications. Her first graphic novel, Exit Wounds, has been published. Ms. Modan, usually based in Tel Aviv, is currently in Sheffield, England.queenscotf

Goettingen was written by famous French singer, Barbara, back in the 1960s. Barbara was of Jewish origin and had to hide from the Nazis during World War 2. The city of Goettingen invited her to come and sing. She hesitated because of her wartime experience with the Germans, but decided to come. A French jew wrote a love song about a German city. This song helped to transform relations between the two peoples. It had a huge impact and helped the French people reconcile with their former oppressors. Now, a new generation has taken up the song.
